Character and identity
Hidden behind an archway in Palma's Old Quarter, this 24-room retreat occupies a 16th-century mansion that's lived previous lives as a family home and a convent school. Architects OHLAB led the restoration, layering contemporary pieces against vintage finds, with a suspended glass plunge pool on the roof that acts as an oculus, refracting light down the central stairwell. Expect a walled garden at the back, a rooftop deck with views across Palma, and a basement spa using Mallorcan GAIA products. Botànic, the in-house restaurant, is run by chef Andrés Benitez. Service is low-key, intuitive, and quietly efficient.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-literate couples and solo travellers in their forties and beyond who want a city base with the feel of a private home. Ideal if you care about restored architecture, vegetable-forward cooking, walkable access to galleries and concept stores, and a small spa with a wellness pergola in the garden.
Should look elsewhere:
Families with young children and anyone wanting a resort footprint or beach access. Light sleepers should note that the heavy bedroom doors and uncarpeted hallways carry sound at night. The spa is compact rather than full-service.
Bottom line
What you're paying for is the architecture and the sense of secluded urban retreat: a serious OHLAB restoration with only 24 rooms, a kitchen worth eating at, and a residential pocket of the Old Quarter at the door. Book a top-floor room under the eaves for rooftop views, and plan at least one dinner at Botànic rather than treating it as breakfast-only.
