Character and identity

Set on a colossal pile of boulders in southern Namibia's desert, Sonop is so well camouflaged you can drive past without seeing it. Ten canvas tents perch on the rocks, reached by Land Rover transfer from a reception outbuilding, then electric golf cart up a winding path to a rug-strewn welcome lookout. Interiors run colonial-nostalgic (pith helmets, four-poster beds, claw-foot tubs, antique furnishings) under the hand of designer Geraldine Dohogne. The infinity pool at the foot of the hill, with giant beanbags and passing oryx, is the signature spot. Solar power means charming old-school touches like ice chests stocked with cold drinks.

Who's it for

Best for:
Affluent, well-travelled, slightly Bohemian guests who fly into Namibia by private bush plane and want to disappear into landscape. Couples and design-literate solo travellers focused on scenery, nostalgia, and stillness will get the most out of it. Special touches (hot air balloon breakfasts, a sunset film screening by the pool) reward those who lean in.

Should look elsewhere:
Anyone needing constant activity, varied restaurants, or a polished service machine should skip it. The communal multi-course dinner doesn't suit everyone, the location demands hours of driving or a charter, and the staircased boulder layout rules it out for guests with any mobility issues.

Bottom line

The setting is the entire proposition: a remote, harsh, beautiful desert you've travelled hard to reach, and a hotel humble enough to vanish into it. If photos of the boulders make you ache to go, book it; if not, you'll find the effort-to-activity ratio punishing. Request a higher tent for shorter staircase climbs, and plan at least two nights to justify the journey.
