Verana Yelapa

Character and identity
Verana sits on a jungle hilltop above the Bay of Banderas, reached only by boat and mule from Yelapa. The work of a former set designer and an interior designer who decamped from Los Angeles in 1997, the property has grown organically into 10 casas, many of them wall-less, with thatched roofs, outdoor showers, and ocean views framed by the canopy. Expect color-blocked walls, vintage Mexican artisan pieces, an open-air library, and a full spa programme. Service runs warm and quietly attentive: fresh bread appears at your door in the morning, then the day is yours.
Who's it for
Best for:
Couples and solo travellers who genuinely want to disconnect, design-minded guests who appreciate an architecturally inventive, owner-built property, and anyone whose idea of luxury is whale-watching from a hammock and falling asleep to wind in the trees. Honeymooners and creative types will find their people here.
Should look elsewhere:
Families with small children, anyone with mobility limitations, and travellers who want a beach on the doorstep, polished resort amenities, or multiple dining venues. The boat-and-mule access, open-walled rooms, and remote setting are the entire point and not for everyone.
Bottom line
What you are buying here is seclusion and a singular design sensibility, not a conventional resort product. The remoteness, the open-walled casas, and the slow rhythm are the experience. Book if you want to be off-grid for a week with a partner; pick a casa with the ocean view you came for, and allow at least four nights to make the journey in worthwhile.
