Character and identity

Tinajani sits at 14,600 feet in a 200-hectare nature reserve in the southern Peruvian Andes, several hours by road from Juliaca and a long way from the Machu Picchu circuit. The setting is the headline act: the red, anthropomorphic rock formations of Tinajani Canyon, layered with Inca and pre-Inca tombs. Just 12 guests stay in safari-style paired tents (one for sleeping, one for lounging), anchored by an 1890 farmhouse the Andean group recently took over. Interiors lean on alpaca wool, locally-sourced ceramics, restored thatched roofs and wood-fire stoves. Communal dinners, guided hikes, and a gentle, deeply personal service register define the rhythm.

Who's it for

Best for:
Adventurous couples and solo travellers who want serious hiking, archaeology, and big-sky solitude over resort polish. It suits design-minded guests already doing an Andean road trip through Cusco, Puno and Colca, and anyone drawn to community-led excursions with weavers and ceramists in nearby villages.

Should look elsewhere:
Families with small children, anyone with mobility limitations (uneven ground, steep inclines, tented layout), and travellers who want a spa, varied dining venues, or a hotel they can step out of into a town. The altitude is genuinely demanding and rules out guests who can't acclimatise in advance.

Bottom line

What you're paying for is access: a remote canyon almost no one sees, walked with guides who know its tombs and trails, and returned to for hot tubs, alpaca blankets and candlelit communal dinners. Book it as the centrepiece of a multi-stop Andean itinerary, ideally after two nights at Titilaka to acclimatise, and don't skip the textile and ceramic excursions to Pucara on the way out.
