Character and identity
Set in the brickwork laneways of Auckland's Britomart precinct, this 10-story, 104-room tower is New Zealand's first 5 Green Star hotel and the centrepiece of a long-running waterfront rejuvenation. Designer Emily Priest's interiors lean on local craft: blackened earth walls, bluestone boulders, woven fabrics, driftwood door handles dipped in brass, and a feature wall of west coast volcanic sand. Kingi, the ground-floor restaurant from the Orphans Kitchen team, builds its menu around New Zealand seafood, naming the fishermen on the page. Service is warm and unstuffy, with courtesy bikes for guests heading into the CBD.
Who's it for
Best for:
Design-minded couples and solo travellers who want a city stay with a conscience and craft sensibility, and who care about provenance, ceramics, photography and good seafood. Ideal if you want to walk straight out into Auckland's best shopping, bakeries and the Viaduct Harbour without sacrificing calm at the end of the day.
Should look elsewhere:
Families wanting a resort footprint, kids' club or pool culture won't find it here, and anyone after a sprawling spa or multiple dining outlets should look at a larger property. Room service is limited to a subset of the Kingi menu.
Bottom line
What you're really booking is a serious sustainability story wrapped in genuinely considered design, anchored by one of Auckland's most interesting seafood kitchens. Spend up for one of the five Landing Suites or the 700 sq ft Rangihoua Suite on the top floor for its wraparound terrace and fireplace; the standard rooms are smaller but detailed with the same care, and a sound pick at lower rates.
