Character and identity

A 66-room jewel box on a quiet stretch of Fairfax, Short Stories is the reinvention of the former Farmers Daughter Hotel under Leo Grifka (of Culver City's Palihouse). The look is bright, plant-filled California through a European lens: checkered marble and Venetian plaster lobby washed in skylight, a living-wall pool area by Rolling Greens, and a terrazzo-and-brass Parisian-style courtyard built for unhurried lunches. The restaurant and craft cocktail bar come from Peruvian American chef Ricardo Zarate, whose pan-American menu folds ceviche and market potatoes alongside kale caesars and flatbreads. Service runs laid back rather than formal.

Who's it for

Best for:
Design-literate couples and solo travellers who want a small, stylish base in Mid-City, with The Grove, the Original Farmers Market, LACMA and the Academy Museum all within walking distance. Foodies will appreciate Zarate's cooking on property, and anyone using the hotel as a launchpad benefits from the roughly 30-minute reach to Downtown or Santa Monica.

Should look elsewhere:
Travellers who expect full-service resort infrastructure should look elsewhere. There's no gym on site (the hotel refers guests to local partners), wellness is limited to occasional weekend yoga, and the service register is casual rather than polished. Families wanting kids' programming won't find it here.

Bottom line

The draw is the design and the address: a boutique property with genuine architectural personality, a serious chef in residence, and Museum Row and The Grove on the doorstep. Book a Junior Suite or Grand Studio Suite for the Kenton Nelson art, rounded armoires and Carrera marble tables, and come knowing this is a stylish base, not a full-service hotel.
