Character and identity

Set on Calle Larga XXII Marzo, a pedestrianised parade of luxury boutiques a few minutes from St Mark's Square, the Nolinski occupies a stile Liberty former stock exchange rather than a converted palazzo, which immediately sets it apart from Venice's grand-dame competitors. Yann Le Coadic and Alessandro Scotto's interiors layer Art Deco, mid-century industrial and contemporary notes with restraint, threaded through with mirrors, Avem glassware and powder-pink velvet. The 43 rooms vary considerably in shape and size. Dining runs from Il Caffè in a parasol-shaded courtyard to the domed Palais Royal under Philip Chronopoulos, with a tall, velvety Library Bar in between. Service is warm and notably polished, with senior staff poached from the Cipriani.

Who's it for

Best for:
Design-literate travellers who've done the Gritti and the Cipriani and want a fresh take on Venice, ideally a couple drawn to French sensibility, Greek-inflected French cooking, and a rooftop pool with 360-degree views. Families are well catered for too, with eight connecting rooms and concierge-led mask-making and treasure hunts.

Should look elsewhere:
Purists chasing a 15th-century palazzo fantasy with frescoed ceilings and canal-side water entrances won't find it here. Business travellers should note the curious absence of desks. And anyone with mobility limits should weigh the realities of Venice itself, however accessible the hotel is once you arrive.

Bottom line

What you're really buying is originality: a confidently un-Venetian Venice hotel, with cooking and service that hold their own against the city's heritage names. Book a corner room (302, 407 or 501 are the standouts) and call ahead about light and views, since the listed building means no two rooms are alike. Go now, while it still feels like a discovery.
