Character and identity

A 91-room boutique tucked into Vienna's 6th district, Motto occupies a wedge-shaped 17th-century building with literary form (it cameos as Hotel Kummer in John Irving's Hotel New Hampshire). The design language is unabashed 1920s Paris: powder-pink boudoir bedrooms, Deco curves, restored showpiece staircase, chandeliers modelled on ones bought at auction from the Ritz Paris, and a Chez Dede mural of bellhops and leopards in the lobby. Up top sits Chez Bernard, a foliage-draped French-Austrian bistro and bar that pulls in locals; downstairs, an in-house bakery turns out exceptional croissants and sourdough. Service is warm but pared-back rather than full-service.

Who's it for

Best for:
Design-literate couples and solo travellers who want a contemporary, homegrown read on Vienna rather than imperial pomp. The Neubau location suits people who like wandering cobbled side streets for natural wine bars, independent bookshops and old Kaffeehäuser, and who appreciate a strong restaurant and bakery on site. Rates from around $245 make it good value for the design quality.

Should look elsewhere:
Anyone wanting a traditional grand-hotel experience with bellhops, room service and in-room phones should book elsewhere; none of that exists here. Families with older children, mobility-impaired guests (it's a listed building with only two accessible rooms), and travellers who want to be steps from the 1st-district sights will find the fit awkward.

Bottom line

The appeal here is a properly considered, locally rooted design hotel at a price the international competition can't match, with a restaurant and bakery that anchor it in the neighbourhood. Book if you value atmosphere and cooking over conventional luxury service. Aim for a sixth-floor room with a balcony or terrace; room 307 has the grand crescent balcony in the bow.
